Ancient Capital Red Canal Lotus (Bare Root)

Nelumbo nucifera — medium lotus, shipped as a dormant lotus tuber.

Deep, luminous color saturates the large peony-shaped flower of 'Ancient Capital Red Canal'. This lotus hits right at the height boundary between a large and a medium classification when grown in an 18" diameter pot. We have found it to be a quick and early bloomer. The color does not fade as the flower ages. 'Red Canal' sometimes has a petaloid formation in the receptacle (center); at other times, the receptacle will produce seeds.

As a medium lotus, this one settles at 6 to 18 inches of water over the crown once established — start a new tuber under 2 to 4 inches and raise the level as it pushes aerial leaves, with the growing tip left uncovered.
